Some good news for wannabe doctors in the state.

Gujarat State government has proposed an increase of 255 seats for postgraduate medical courses in three medical colleges in the state.

The primary beneficiaries of this seat increase will be government-run medical colleges like NHL Municipal Medical College Ahmedabad where 100 seats will added, Vadodara Medical College where 70 seats will be added and government medical colleges in Jamnagar which will get 75 more seats, taking the total number of PG seats to 255 in these colleges.

According to sources, Gujarat State Health minister has called a meeting of deans and medical superintendent of medical college to decide on increase in staff strength and policy changes in recruitment process in the colleges.

Speaking about NHL Municipal Medical College which falls under Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, municipal commissioner IP Gautam said, "We have sent a proposal for increase of 100 seats at NHL.

The pre-requisite of bed capacity of 1,200 at VS Hospital and Shardaben Hospital is fulfilled as per Medical Council of India (MCI) guidelines for the addition of seats."

The Medical Council of India has gifted wannabe doctors of Gujarat with 290 more seats for post-graduate medical courses. Nationwide, the seat increase is 3,791.

The change is effective from the academic year 2010-11. This jump in seats is attributed to a new set of rules introduced by MCI recently where every professor can take care of two students. Earlier, one professor was limited to one student.

This has effectively doubled the capacity. Correspondingly, the number of PG seats has jumped to 18,000.

The primary beneficiaries of this seat increase will be government-run medical colleges like B J Medical College Ahmedabad and NHL Municipal Medical College Ahmedabad, Vadodara Medical College, Surat Municipal Medical College, Bhavnagar Medical College, Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Medical Colleage Rajkot City and Jamnagar Medical College.

Nationwide, Andhra Pradesh has bagged the most seats with 611, followed by Maharashtra (476).

Gujarat is at No.6 with 290 seats. "Students hailing from poor economic backgrounds will benefit from this increase. Now, deserving students can get admission without having to worry about exorbitant capitation fees. The students will no longer need to contend with hefty fee structure of private colleges," said Ketan Desai, president of MCI.

A first for Saurashtra University: MBBS student bags record 13 gold medals.

An MBBS student from the Jamnagar City Medical College has picked up a record 13 gold medals, the highest till date bagged by any student of Saurashtra University.

Apoorva Vijaysinh Dodia, a student of Shri M P Shah Medical College, Jamnagar, stood first in the MBBS.

IIIrd year, Part II examination conducted this February, scoring a whopping 82.1 per cent mark. This has been the highest mark achieved by anyone in the history of the college and Saurashtra University, since its inception.

He also scored the highest marks in all the four subjects in the examination, which is a record in itself.

On December 13, he will be awarded nine gold medals (another first for the university) for the 3rd year MBBS Part -II examination during the 44th Convocation Ceremony.

He was also declared “the student of the year 2008-09” for which he was awarded gold medals at the Gujarat Medical Association conference in Bhavnagar City on November 21.

Apoorva has several other records to his credit: MBBS Ist year — 82.3 per cent; MBBS IInd year — 82.5 per cent; MBBS IIIrd year, Part I — 83.5 per cent and MBBS IIIrd year, Part II — 82.1 per cent (all highest ever scored by a student).

There are a total of 14 subjects from the Ist to the final year in MBBS and Apoorva has secured the highest marks in each and every subject till now. There are a total of 13 gold medals which can be awarded to an MBBS student from the Ist to the final year and Apoorva has bagged all of them, four previously and nine now.

His father Vijaysinh is a general surgeon and mother, Mili, a gynaecologist — both having practice in Jamnagar.

Apoorva plans to pursue post-graduation and credits his success to his teachers.
