Because of heavy good rainfall, few days ago, Nyari Dam which is almost main water supply for Rajkot City overflowed

Rajkot Municipal Corporation Chief Engineer Vijay Unadakat said that,"Presently, Nyari dam has 986 MCMFT water against it capacity of 944 MCMFT.''

Apart from Nyari, Aji dam and Bhadar dam, too, received a good inflow of fresh water which is provide drinking water for Rajkot.

The rain figures, as reported by the flood control room officials, are: Dhoraji (15 mm), (20 mm), TalajaUna (10 mm), Visavadar (10 mm) and Amreli (7 mm).

Manavadar Village (Junagadh Taluko) had received heavy rainfall over 12 inch (more than 300 mm) rainfall before few days ago.

Junagadh District room officials said that the situation is now normal and no casualty has been reported as rain stopped.

R C Faldu Gujarat State BJP President - unveil spelt flyover's 2nd part

Gujarat State BJP president Ranchhodbhai Chhanabhai Faldu (R C Faldu) unveiled the second part of the split flyover bridge constructed on 150 feet Ring Road few days ago.

Finance Minister Vajubhai Vala and other political leaders will also grace the function.

The 1.35 km-long flyover has been constructed under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) in the city and is a part of the first phase of the 10.70 km Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) project (Blue Corridor) from Gondal Road-Ring Road junction to Jamnagar Road.

The 150-feet Ring Road is among the busiest roads in the city as it is a bypass road connecting traffic from Gondal Road to Jamnagar Road.

The flyover will ease the traffic on it which passes busy crossroads as well.

The entire BRTS project will be implemented in three corridors (Blue, Green and Red) in phased manner.

The total length of the BRTS project is 63.50 km.

Rajkot Municipal Corporation - Mercedes-Benz bus to soon run on BRTS corridor

The Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) is all set for a trial run of the Mercedes Benz bus on the first phase of 10.70 km Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) on 150 Ring Road in the city.

Last week officials of Mercedes-Benz had come to the city and imparted training to six fire brigade personnel on how to operate the special buses.


The 60 - Seater AC bus will be run on trial and RMC has sent an agreement to the bus manufacturing company as they are providing a trial run free of cost.

The trial run will be carried out in the next week as they have already set the deadline to run buses on BRTS track before June 30.

Jamnagar Rajkot Students will attend Duke University in United States this year

90 students from the across the India have been selected to attend a semester at Duke University in US this year. Out of 90 pupils 15 are from Gujarat State Schools from various cities like Ahmedabad City, Rajkot City and Jamnagar City.

They will now participate in a 21 day initiation workshop at Infosys' Mysore campus from May 15.

This Talent Identification Programme identifies and nurtures students' natural talent, is a 30-year-old programme that came to India a couple of years ago.

Initially offered only to selected schools across the country, this year the competition was open to all; more than 1 lakh students participated. After rigorous selection process, 90 of them made the cut.

City based Educational Initiatives (EI) has joined hands with Duke University for the purpose as EI conducted ASSET scores will be valid for the selection process. The test is undertaken biannually to determine conceptual clarity and overall understanding.

"This year, around 90 students will attend this workshop. And those participating don't belong to just metros like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai and Ahmedabad, but also from smaller towns like Rajkot, Jamnagar , Nasik, Guwahati, Ajmer, Bernala, Dehradun, Siliguri and Mysore," said an EI official.

Students are offered topics such as environmental engineering, entrepreneurial leadership, Java for video games and forensic science.

The Gujarat Government and State Election Commission have decided to introduce e-voting in the next local body elections becoming the first state in the country to enable citizens to cast their franchise online.

"This will be for the first time in the country that in any official election the method of online voting via internet will be used, beginning with Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation polls scheduled in mid-October followed by Rajkot City, Vadodara City, Surat City, Bhavnagar City and Jamnagar City local body elections," SEC Secretary, P H Shah said.

"A task force has been formed to cover all the aspects of e-voting headed by Gujarat State Election Commissioner K C Kapoor," Shah said.

Also, Gujarat's urban development department has issued a draft notification asking for objections and suggestions on the issue last week, he said.

"The purpose for introduction of online voting is to make affluent class people vote, who generally avoid going to polling booths and standing in long queues to vote. Besides, youths will be attracted to vote in this manner," he added.

"We are planning to rope in top IT firms of the country to give end-to-end services as it involves finer aspects like secrecy of vote, authenticity of the voter, ensuring that no bogus voting takes place," Shah said.

At Race Course Campus Rajkot, Pet owners of various cities of Saurashtra will bring their dogs dressed in different outfits and accessories to walk a ramp built on.

With the help of Balbhavan, aimed at generating awareness of dogs and guide pet owners on pet care, this newly formed association has organized the show.

Secretary of this association named Arun Dave, according to him, 286 pet owners have already registered for the show.

Saffron brigade's threats of disrupting the screening of My Name Is Khan (MNIK), protests and appeals against viewing it through SMSes, did not deter people from thronging cinemas in all major cities of the state where the Shahrukh Khan Starrer movie ran to packed houses on Friday.

The movie got a mixed response in Ahmedabad City where VHP workers protested in the morning and burnt posters of Shahrukh Khan near a multiplex on Ashram Road.

The first two shows were cancelled at all multiplexes in the city owing to the threat by various groups. However, with good response from audience and assurance from police, multiplex and film hall owners went ahead with screening.

Heavy police bandobust at cinema halls in Surat City, Vadodara City, Rajkot City and other major towns and cities ensured that nothing untoward happened.

However, in north Gujarat cinema halls in some towns, including Himmatnagar, Deesa and Patan, did not screen the movie fearing violence.

At least 40 VHP workers were rounded up in Navsari City, 22 protesters, including some from Bajrang Dal, were detained in Sabarkantha and Banaskantha districts and 50 were arrested in Bharuch City and Ankleshwar City.

In Himmatnagar, protesters entered Neelam cinema hall during the interval and manhandled some viewers forcing the management to cancel the show and shut down the theatre for the day. Fans in Mehsana had not trouble in viewing the film.

In Rajkot and Jamnagar City, after initial protest Shiv Sena, Bajrang Dal and VHP activists chose to let SRK fans enjoy the movie.

However, in Bhavnagar City theatre owners chose not to release the film despite police assurance.

Protesters' bid to burn a Pakistani flag in Rajkot was foiled by the police. In a pre-emptive move the VHP city office near Bombay Market in Surat was surrounded by the police from morning to prevent the workers from carrying out any violent activity to protest against the screening of the movie.

On Thursday, VHP had circulated SMSes requesting people to avoid watching MNIK, according to Utkarsh Patel, joint secretary south Gujarat, VHP. On Friday, VHP workers called up theaters and multiplexes and requested not to screen the movie. However, the theater and multiplex owners did not pay any heed to this. Bharuch town was the sole exception in south Gujarat where the movie was not screened.

Elaborate police security was maintained at all theaters and multiplexes in Vadodara where the movie was screened released in five multiplexes and four cinema halls.

The state government is planning to allocate Rs500 crore to Ahmedabad City in the upcoming budget of 2010-11. Surat City will get Rs400 crore while Vadodara City and Rajkot City will get Rs200 crore each in the budget.

Nitin Patel, state urban development minister, announced this on Tuesday while addressing a meeting of the state planning committee attended by the mayors, standing committee chairmen and municipal commissioners of the corporations in the state.

A total of Rs1, 300 crore will be given to the four municipal corporations. Patel said this will be allocated under the chief minister's golden jubilee urban development scheme.

He asked all the corporation authorities to concentrate on projects of sewerage and water supply among others. He asked them to plan and execute things keeping in mind the human development aspect. He said that a substantial budget will be allocated to Bhavnagar City, Junagadh City and Jamnagar City Municipal Corporation and 159 municipalities of the state.

Saurabh Patel, minister of state for planning, finance and industry also attended the meeting.

“Rajkot City's own H1N1 testing lab within week”, said health minister.

Taking a serious note of H1N1 death toll across Saurashtra, Gujarat State heath and tourism minister Jay Narayan Vyas in his second consecutive address in the city on Wednesday said, the state government is going to set up a laboratory for H1N1 virus testing in Rajkot City Gujarat India.

"The laboratory will be operational within a week. It will help reduce the time lag of test results of suspected cases of Saurashtra,'' Vyas said. At present the region's hospitals send samples to BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad. He also said that new ventilators will be provided at all isolation wards of hospitals treating case in Saurashtra.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, one more death of a suspected swine flu patient Sulochana Ravi, 30, a pregnant woman from Rafaliya village of Wankaner taluka was reported from PDU hospital in the city. At present there are 33 patients out of which six are in critical condition, four are on ventilators.

As per government reports, 18 more cases were reported from the state on Wednesday six from Ahmedabad, five from Rajkot, one each from Vadodara City and Amreli City, two from Jamnagar, and two from Bhavnagar.

The state death toll is 162, with one death of Ghansham Patel, 28, in Ahmedabad Civil Hospital while on Tuesday, two deaths were reportedseven-year-old girl Vali Karshan in Guru Gobind Singh Hospital Jamnagar City and 47-year-old woman Rukya Fakir in Sir T General Hospital in Bhavnagar City.

'Give a degree to your daughter instead of dowry'

Taking a cue from Patel community model in girls' education, Rajputs across Saurashtra and Kutch have joined hands and launched a Rajput Kanya Kelvani Rath Yatra with an aim to spread awareness within their community.

"The scenario of girl’s education in our community is very poor, particularly in rural areas. Gender inequality, social customs and economic conditions are the major reasons for their not being allowed to study further. So, we thought of reaching out to the remote villages and spreading awareness,'' says PT Jadeja, who spearheads the yatra, organized by Akhil Gujarat Rajput Yuva Sangh.

Generally, girls drop out after primary education in villages as their parents let them study till there is a facility within their village, he explained. "So many aspirant girls do not get higher education despite qualification. We hope that, our yatra will change the scenario'' says Bhikhubha Vadher, another one of the organizers.

"We give the Patel community's example for girls education. Apart from girls' education, we want the community to reject old customs and adopt social reforms. We urge them that they should give a degree to their daughter' instead of dowry,' Patel adds.

The yatra, which began on December 14, 2009 in Surendranagar district, has already covered 100 villages and has plans to cover 100 more by the coming week.

Similar yatras have been conducted in 2005 and 2007 in Rajkot and Jamnagar districts. "Each year, we cover a different district and this time we chose Surendranagar," Jadeja said.

Furthermore, this yatra is also used as a medium for fund collection to build free-of-charge educational institutes in the respective district to facilitate the girl child education. "From the money we collect from the yatras and donations, we have been building special girls' hostels and educational buildings at district levels where girls from class VIII onwards can get admission and get education up to graduation or post-graduation, whichever field she prefers,'' he added.

"We have already built two such hostels in Rajkot and Jamnagar, with 250 occupancy each," he added. In fact, the organizers got an overwhelming response, so much so that they need to expand the existing capacity of the girls' hostels.

The group has also floated the idea of adoption of girls - to sponsor education of girls of poor backgrounds. In February, this yatra will go to 325 villages in Kutch district with same message.

Swine flu toll mounts in Delhi, Gujarat.

At least two more death from swine H1N1 flu was recorded in Delhi, health officials reported. The total number of fatalities in the capital is now up at 69.

According to a health official from the city one of the deceases was a 23-year-old man who had been admitted to the Safdarjung hospital where he succumbed. The details of the other person are, as yet, unavailable.

Delhi has seen 62 new cases of swine flu, with 18 of these being children. There have been a total 9,260 cases in the city so far. Concerned officials claimed that the number of newer cases has dropped over some days.

Meanwhile in Gujarat, swine flu has reportedly causes at least ten deaths over the last two days taking the state’s casualty figure to 100. Of these, 92 deaths were of people from Gujarat while the remaining 8 were of people from Rajasthan who were being treated in hospitals in Gujarat.

Gujarat health authorities also announced that at least 16 new cases were reported, taking the total number of cases to 647. Out of a total of 2,613 suspected cases, 1,966 had tested negative, they confirmed. The new cases were registered from Ahmedabad City, Rajkot City, Vadodara City, Bhuj City, Jamnagar City and Bhavnagar City.

RMC launches health drive, targets 6.1 lakh students. Nearly 6.1 lakh schoolchildren will be checked as part of Rajkot Municipal Corporation’s health drive launched on Monday.

The three-month-long drive will end on January 9, 2010.

In Rajkot, a team of 75 MBBS doctors and 19 BAMS (Ayurvedic) doctors will be covering 1,612 anganwadi (kindergarten), 1,804 primary and 406 secondary schools, conducting health check-ups of 6,10,088 children, said district chief health officer Dr A S Sanghavi.

Sanghavi gave out details of the drive during a meeting with the district collector on Monday.

The meeting gave an overview of the health scenario in Rajkot district to the state administration through video conferencing. "Also joining this drive is a team of 23 referral doctors, 21 government doctors and two private doctors," said Sanghavi.

The drive assumes significance in the light of shocking data collected during last year's health check-up camp, in which 162 students of class VIII and IX were found to be suffering from heart diseases in Rajkot district. Of these, 13 students had to be shifted to a hospital in Chennai and operated upon.

The state government had spent Rs 13 lakh after the surgery and treatment. The remaining 149 students were moved to UN Mehta Hospital and provided treatment. This apart, several students were found to have vision problems and were provided with spectacles.

"In Jamnagar, a total of 1,400 anganwadis, 1,800 primary and 250 high schools will be covered under this drive meant for children in the age group of 1 to 17," said district health officer Dr DK Patel. The drive will be conducted under the supervision of district development officer JM Luni.

The drive is conducted every year since 1997. Health check-up of 4.5 lakh students in Kutch, 4.69 lakh in Surendranagar City, 3.0 lakh students in Bhavnagar City have already been conducted.

Valjibhai Bhalodia passes away.

Renowned educationist and top industrialist in Saurashtra Valjibhai Bhalodia passed away in Rajkot early on Thursday.

Admitted at a private hospital, 96-year-old Bhalodia was suffering from multiple complications.

Bhalodia, a leading social figure in the region, gave the city a chain of schools and colleges under the umbrella of Bhalodia and Galaxy group. His last rites will be performed on Friday morning at the family’s farm house near Targhadi on the Rajkot Jamnagar highway.

Confirmed, suspected, Swine Flu cases reported.

One positive and one suspected case of swine flu were reported in Rajkot City even as a death of a suspected swine flu patient was reported from Jamnagar City.

Rajkot Municipal Corporation Health officers said both patients have been admitted to Wockhardt Hospital on Kalawad Road.

Hospital authorities said Hetal Faldu (24), a resident of Mendarda town in Junagadh district was shifted to Rajkot two days ago with complaints of high fever, cough and cold.

Her swab samples were sent to the B J Medical College in Ahmedabad, which later turned out to be positive.

She is taking treatment at the isolation ward and her condition is reported to be stable, said hospital authorities.

But authorities are still awaiting the test results of one more patient admitted at the hospital with swine flu symptoms. A resident of Saurashtra Kala Kendra in Rajkot, Meghna Udani (34) has been treated for swine flu.

A total of eight swine flu cases have been reported from Rajkot.

Meanwhile, Bhavesh Kanjaria (28), who was admitted with swine flu symptoms at the Guru Govind Singh Hospital in Jamnagar on Wednesday, died on Thursday night.

Jamnagar Civil Hospital authorities said the blood and cough samples were sent to Ahmedabad.

Kanjaria, however, died before the test reports could be available, they said.
