The swine flu death graph is rising at an alarming rate in Rajkot District.

Five more people died on Friday and Saturday. Since June 22, when the first suspected case was reported in the city, the death toll has been steadily climbing. The toll as per sources is 20. A total 547 patients were treated in outpatient door department, created for swine flu patients at Rajkot's Pandit Dindayal Hospital, control room in charge of the hospital Dr U Mehta said.

On December 25, after a one-and-half-year-old baby died in the morning, a 50-year-old woman succumbed to H1N1 in the night.

On December 26, four-month-old baby Chintan Anilkumar, admitted on Wednesday from Kankot area, Rajesh D, 19, brought from Halwad in Surendranagar district on Friday died in the civil hospital. Rekha Turi, 40, of Jamsalaya in Jamnagar district died in a private hospital in Rajkot. Since Rekha's case was the first one reported in Jamsalaya, her house has been sealed and all preventive measures are being taken.

From December 17 to 24, 10 patients have died. At present, 36 of them are under treatment, of which 26 are positive cases and reports for 10 are awaited from Ahmedabad.

The death figures have jolted the Rajkot administration into action. Many are blaming the lax attitude of the administration for high number of deaths. The first death was reported on August 25, but special outpatient door treatment for swine flu patients was started a month later on September 10, a source said.

Meanwhile, more doctors have been appointed to tackle the situation since last week. "A chief doctor, two residents, two assistant professor-level doctors, one anesthetist and extra nurses have been put on duty per shift," said Dr Mehta.

In Rajkot, till date, 784 patients were given preventive treatment. According to sources, out of samples sent for confirmation, 88 per cent samples were positive. Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) health officer Dr Mitesh Bhanderi said, 1,050 doctors were given special training on swine flu guidelines.

Suspected H1N1 patient dies in Rajkot City.

A suspected H1N1 patient died on Wednesday at Rajkot Civil Hospital, which has so far registered five deaths due to swine flu.

Also in Jamnagar City, a 19-year-old woman tested positive for swine flu after she was admitted to GG Hospital on Wednesday.

According to hospital officials, Samir Diwan (18) succumbed to high fever. His report on throat swab sample is awaited.

"Samir, a native of Than Gujarat, was down with fever at his uncle's place in Morbi City. As there was no improvement in his condition, he was shifted to civil hospital here. We collected samples of his throat swab, sputum and blood and sent them to Ahmadabad’s civil hospital for testing. However, before the test report could arrive, the patient succumbed after five hours of treatment," a hospital official said.

One more swine flu suspect Arti Mandan (2) from Shastrinagar Society in Gandhigram area was shifted to Rajkot Civil Hospital. "As Arti was running high fever since past few days, we shifted her to the isolation ward and collected her throat swab samples," the official said. The condition of another swine flu patient Dharmishta (14) deteriorated and she was put on ventilator.

Meanwhile, the positive report of swine flu suspect from Patel Colony area in Jamnagar has caused widespread panic among the staff of GG Hospital (Guru Govind Singh Hospital Jamnagar), including doctors and nurses, who volunteered their throat swab samples for testing.

"The testing could not be carried out. Instead, we have provided them with Tamiflu tablets as a preventive measure," said a hospital official.

Of the swine flu suspects, the hospital admitted a 13-year-old boy from Manavadar, who was suffering from fever and chronic cough. "The boy has been quarantined for obvious reasons. We've collected his throat swabs and sent them to Ahmedabad for testing, the report of which is awaited," the official said.

Jamnagar City doc tests positive for swine flu.

A gynecologist working in Guru Govind singh Hospital here has been tested positive for the H1N1 virus.

The 25-year-old is a student and resident doctor who has been working in the hospital for two years. She has been transferred to Rajkot for further treatment.

Four doctors and a nurse, who used to work in close contact with her, have been asked to take precautions, said district health officer of the city KP Patel.

An urgent meeting was held after the test results were out. A state-level expert came to Jamnagar for the case. State nodal officer Dr Kamlesh Upadhyay, director of health department and special nodal officer at the centre held meetings with CMOs of other hospitals in the city and medical associations.

Confirmed, suspected, Swine Flu cases reported.

One positive and one suspected case of swine flu were reported in Rajkot City even as a death of a suspected swine flu patient was reported from Jamnagar City.

Rajkot Municipal Corporation Health officers said both patients have been admitted to Wockhardt Hospital on Kalawad Road.

Hospital authorities said Hetal Faldu (24), a resident of Mendarda town in Junagadh district was shifted to Rajkot two days ago with complaints of high fever, cough and cold.

Her swab samples were sent to the B J Medical College in Ahmedabad, which later turned out to be positive.

She is taking treatment at the isolation ward and her condition is reported to be stable, said hospital authorities.

But authorities are still awaiting the test results of one more patient admitted at the hospital with swine flu symptoms. A resident of Saurashtra Kala Kendra in Rajkot, Meghna Udani (34) has been treated for swine flu.

A total of eight swine flu cases have been reported from Rajkot.

Meanwhile, Bhavesh Kanjaria (28), who was admitted with swine flu symptoms at the Guru Govind Singh Hospital in Jamnagar on Wednesday, died on Thursday night.

Jamnagar Civil Hospital authorities said the blood and cough samples were sent to Ahmedabad.

Kanjaria, however, died before the test reports could be available, they said.

Government revises swine flu toll to 28.

After days of denial, the central government Wednesday revised the number of swine flu deaths to 28 from 25 though no fresh deaths were reported. The country also reported 216 new cases of Influenza A (H1N1), taking the total number of infected people to 2,243.

The cumulative deaths reported till now are 28 - Pune (13), Bangalore (5), Mumbai (3), Nasik (3), Ahmedabad (1), Chennai (1), Vadodara (1) and Thiruvananthapuram (1), the health ministry said.

The addition in death toll was one from Mumbai and two from Nashik. However, the ministry did not give details of the deaths. Till Tuesday, the health ministry had maintained that there were only 25 deaths.

It also said that 216 laboratory confirmed cases were reported Wednesday of which Mumbai had 48, Pune, 36, Nashik, Aurangabad, Rajkot and Latur three each. While Nanded reported two cases, Nagpur had 13 and Dhule had five fresh cases.

Similarly, Ratnagiri and Beed reported 2 cases each, while Buldhana Ahmednagar, Kolhapur, Satara, Dibrugarh, Jamnagar, Vadodara, Ahmedabad and Daman reported one case.

Down south, Chennai reported 30 cases, Coimbatore nine, Bangalore 17 and Mangalore one case. In Delhi, 25 fresh cases were reported and Gurgaon had three cases. Two people were tested positive for the virus in Surat.

The health ministry said so far 11,724 people have been tested out of which 2,243 are positive for Influenza A (H1N1). Of the total positive cases, 758 have been discharged.

Saurashtra first confirmed swine flu case detected in Bhavnagar.

The first confirmed case of swine flu in Saurashtra has been reported from Bhavnagar where a nursing student has tested positive with the deadly H1N1 virus.

Besides, test reports in more than half-a-dozen suspected cases from Rajkot and Jamnagar are awaited.

So far, swine flu has claimed three lives in the state, one in Vadodara and two in Ahmedabad.

More than a dozen suspected cases have been reported mainly at Rajkot and Jamnagar districts, but this is the first case that has tested positive.

Authorities at the Sir Thaktsinhji (ST) Hospital in Bhavnagar have confirmed that one of the two students, whose blood samples had been sent to the B J Medical College, has tested positive. “The student has been quarantined at home and is being given proper treatment.

He has been showing signs of improvement,” said a doctor with the S T Hospital. The patient is a resident of Shardanagar area in Bhavnagar and is a third-year nursing student at the Bhartiya Vidyapith in Pune.

He, along with other students from the state, returned after schools and colleges in Pune were shut down owing to the swine flu scare. Apparently, when he and other students did not get train tickets, they hired a taxi all the way to Gujarat.

Last Sunday, the boy and another student were taken to the S T Hospital for tests.

They had shown symptoms like high fever, cough and cold and their blood samples were sent to Ahmedabad for testing the same day.

Meanwhile, test reports of three other cases at the Rajkot Civil Hospital are now awaited. The patients include a neurosurgeon and a youngster, who had just been on a trip to Lonavala.

In the last two days, five suspected cases have been reported at the G G Hospital in Jamnagar.

Authorities at the G G Hospital said that while reports of two cases have come out negative, in other three cases, the reports are still awaited.
